I have enjoyed Bob and Nikki, but as Boyd’s characters frequently comment, “I think you broke him.” I am having difficulty in mustering enough “willing suspension of disbelief” to keep the series enjoyable.For some things, suspension is not difficult: Bob’s team hasn’t developed a better stunner because stunner resistance presents needed plot challenges (even if conductive blankets protect people from stunners while conductive hulls don’t). In other areas, my inability to suspend disbelief has been building for several books.The most significant friction is in Boyd’s portrayal of Commonwealth society. His description of the Commonwealth as technologically static started out believably. By Book 10, however, it is clear that bots and ship AIs that were mothballed 40,000 years ago are fully compatible with currently active bots. The ex-Navy bots were active while the shipkeeping bots were powered down, so their compatibility implies 400 centuries of software and hardware stasis.We may also wonder about social and cultural stasis—the Limiter Laws markedly changed Commonwealth society within Dingus’s lifetime, but we see rescued humans (and monkeys) pick up their lives seamlessly after hundreds or thousands of years in autodocs.The last segment of Take Me Home had some great ideas, but it would be easier to accept the irreconcilable timelines and concepts if the book didn’t have so much “Boss, you’re amazing!” dialog and reports of what Bob had for breakfast. For starters, I love where the storyline appears to be heading. I hate the addition of more names. Having opening pages with lists of who they are and their nationality might help you but it only bogs the storyline down. You meet new people fine but there is no reason for most of them to remain in the story. Ships have command and support staff but the bulk of the support staff goes without names. Think Star Trek or Star Wars there are boat loads of extras, we don't need to know all their names. If you need them, give them a spokesperson! It is hard enough reading a book with only one chapter help your readers by whittling do the named characters. In spite of the irritations, I am looking forward to the next book. I just realized, I wrote this review as if the author will read it but he'll probably only count it as part of the 100!
